biography
Juan Sebastián Franco’s paintings explore apparition and enigma. Figures, landscapes and architectural fragments emerge from darkness, sometimes clearly defined and sometimes on the verge of disappearing. A face, a building or a passage through a landscape may seem familiar at first, yet the image resists a fixed interpretation. What is visible always suggests something just beyond it.

Franco approaches painting as a way of invoking a presence rather than representing a scene. His compositions hold moments of revelation and concealment in balance: forms come forward through light, then recede into shadow; spaces appear to open while remaining difficult to enter. This tension gives his work its particular atmosphere, poised between intimacy and estrangement.
The human figure often occupies an uncertain place within these spaces. Its relationship to a setting, to another figure or to the viewer is left unresolved. Franco allows the image to remain open, inviting us to spend time with its details and to notice how perception changes as we look. Narrative is present as a possibility, never as a prescribed account.
His interest in the making of images also extends to printmaking. From 2016 to 2020, Franco was a founding member of Obra Negra, a printmaking workshop in Bogotá. He graduated in Visual Arts from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in 2018.
Franco’s first solo exhibition, En el umbral de la sombra, was presented at SKETCH, Bogotá, in 2025. His work has also been shown at Galería El Museo in Bogotá, Unit 1 Gallery in London and Huang Contemporary in Wuhan. He received third prize at the Salón Nacional de Pintura de Artes Guerrero in 2022 and undertook a residency at Cabin NY in Potsdam, New York, in 2026.
