Christian Sorg

El camino de la pintura

Oct. 1 - Nov. 14, 2026
Bogotá

Galerie Hugo Dufon presents El camino de la pintura, Christian Sorg’s first exhibition in South America. Bringing together eight paintings and six works on paper across both floors of the gallery, the exhibition offers an insight into different periods and scales within a practice devoted to exploring the possibilities of painting.

Sorg’s work emerges from a sustained relationship with place. Landscapes, rocks, and traces of ancient human presence form part of his visual universe. They do not appear as views that the artist seeks to reproduce faithfully; rather, they pass through observation, experience, and memory before finding form on the surface. A place may remain recognizable in the title of a work while simultaneously becoming the starting point for an image open to other interpretations.

In his paintings, color constructs space and sets the rhythm of the gaze. Forms overlap, break off, and reappear. Some suggest the solidity of a rock or the expanse of a landscape; others seem to emerge directly from the movement of the brush. Sorg thus maintains a tension between what he has seen and what takes place during the act of painting. The image retains the intensity of an encounter with a place while acquiring an existence of its own.

The works on paper offer a more intimate perspective on this exploration. Shown alongside the canvases, they reveal how a form or a relationship between colors can unfold in different ways. Across the gallery’s two floors, El camino de la pintura invites visitors to follow these shifts, to pause before each surface, and to discover the connections that emerge between the works.

With a career spanning several decades, Christian Sorg occupies a distinctive position within contemporary French painting. His work is held in the collection of the Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou in Paris. This first presentation in South America offers an opportunity to discover a practice in which looking, remembering, and painting remain closely intertwined.
